Topic: Shipped maps overhaul

again, what is wrong with war of the valleys? the reason given is "map too small", but it's actually bigger than many others. Players have more space than in established maps like desert tournaments. As far as I can see, the actual problem is that the AI cannot play that map because there are places where a large military building is needed to reach the next buildable terrain, and the AI can't figure it out. Basically, we should decide if the capability to be played by AI is a prerequisite of a map. Uhmmm, it probably is, considering that over 90% of people only play against AI. Pity, that rules out archipelago sea. I would have loved to see it as a tournament map. Top Quote |

I remember that on a tournament there were games on maps from Widelands page, not Widelands official build. Maybe next tournament will contain your map? I would like to see the game there einstein13 |

We could leave it and replace "Volcanic Winter" with "Wideworld".
As i remember the consensus was to play maps in a tournament which are accessible before the tournament. So it is makes less difference if a map is shipped or only available on the website. I remember too that in the last tournament many (all?) maps where played which are shipped. I think we could add Archipelago Sea to the shipped maps. Currently there is only one additional map. I submitted wisent valley and finnish lakes with improved descriptions, but I changed nothing in the maps. As I also mentioned in the bug report, we must improve the visualization of hints when choosing a map. As for war of the valleys, since the vast majority of people only play against AI, I am in favor of removing it. As for adding a new 1v1 large map, I'd say it's not needed. To play 1v1 on a large map it is sufficient to play in a larger map with only two players. As for adding wideworld, it is perfectly fine for me. As for adding archipelago sea, I should not decide there since I'm biased on it. Top Quote |

I have just noticed that the map "Kings of Queens v2" is somehow broken. If one starts a game most port spaces get removed because the positions are invalid. One port space is left (from more than 10). fk: Have you any idea why some port spaces are on plain terrain? As a solution we could remove the left port space or someone has to edit the map to have more port spaces on this map. Fight simulator for Widelands: |

I vote "yes" for that map! It is done with good idea of "equal chances" plus "good looking" map. The only thing need to be checked is description: is there a note that AI will not work with that map? @kaputtnik: what is your opinion for that? einstein13 |

Kings and Queens was originally built with R17. I've never used seafaring in that map although it must have been tested. I think that the last remaining port space should be removed. Top Quote |

I am working on a patch to make the hints more visible. Adding newlines to map descriptions or hints is not possible at the moment - the problem lies with how the map packages are read and written, and I don't want to fiddle with that for build 19. Busy indexing nil values Top Quote |

First Post updated. What shall we do with "Volcanic Winter"? Drop or leave the map? Fight simulator for Widelands: |

It's usually better to balance an unbalanced map than to drop it. And if it's not feasible -- or the mapmaker asks you not to change it -- you could always leave it in for when two people of different skill levels play each other. Top Quote |
