This sounds like there is something seriously wrong with your data files. Which version of Widelands are you on? If you are running Build 19, have you uninstalled your old Widelands version first? Which language are you playing in?

I did not see your reply before editing my post, sorry about that.

I uninstalled widelands months ago this was a fresh install from the Arch repository, I am playing in English on an English install of Arch.

I added another problem with coal mines in my last edit as well.

I have a problem, the first objective is to build two rangers huts, there are no rangers huts in the build list, there is however the strabgly names fishermanr's hut, you get no clue about what it is until you build it, when the worker arrives he is a ranger.

I couldn't confirm this on arch-linux. Just removed my widelands-bzr ( from AUR ) and installed widelands from the normal repository. Then i played the first campaign and all looks good to me. The installed version here is:

$:> pacman -Qi widelands
Name : widelands
Version : 19-2
Beschreibung : A realtime strategy game with emphasis on economy and transport
Architektur : x86_64
[...]

Could you try finding the widelands files and directories? My output for comparison:

$:> find /usr -name widelands
/usr/share/licenses/widelands
/usr/share/widelands
/usr/bin/widelands

To be sure, this is how it should be:

I know what it should be but it is showing fishermanr's hut for ranger , fisher amd hunter. The coal mine is a large building and cannot be built on mountains, I can only build a deep coal mine which turns up as a standard coal mine. With the Imperial tribe I have only found the mine problem and the weapon smithy and armour smithy are both called weapon smithy.

Sorry for my stupid questions...

Lets try to find the scenario directory. There has to be only one on a normal installation:

:> find / -name bar01.wmf -type d 2>/dev/null
/usr/share/widelands/campaigns/bar01.wmf

Compare the files and timestamps:

$:> ls -l /usr/share/widelands/campaigns/bar01.wmf/scripting
insgesamt 60
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 540 10. Nov 08:28 helper_functions.lua
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 741 10. Nov 08:28 init.lua
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10533 10. Nov 08:28 mission_thread.lua
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6331 10. Nov 08:28 secret_village.lua
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1703 10. Nov 08:28 starting_conditions.lua
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28549 10. Nov 08:28 texts.lua

You could try to compare the file starting_conditions.lua from your installtion with the original file

There is only one scenario directory, the files and timestamps match and the file is identical.

This problem is not just limited to the scenario's, I just treied a new game and the buildings are all misnamed the same same there, and some wares have the wrong text as well.

The problem will be with the tribes directory, because that is where the buildings are defined. I have no clue what might be causing this ATM - maybe an indexing problem with the tribe objects.

Have you tried the old uninstall-reinstall rick?

It looks like a problem with the British English translation strings. Looks like some strings are mis-translated; I'll get them fixed on Transifex.

Edit: Some have already been fixed, I've done the smithys / weaving mills / charcoal sites / toolsmiths as well as various others, and made a cursory check of all the British English strings.
