I started playing Widelands two days ago, here's my feedback:
-
the default speed is too slow, I vote change it, the only time I'm not 2x is on that Atlantean campaign when the sea level rises
-
map scrolling with the arrow keys is glacially slow, if I could change anything that would be it
-
the mini map is also basically unusable for scrolling because the contents move when you click, they need to stay still
-
a lot of basic controls use keys that my laptop doesn't have (including the speed adjustment). I don't have page-up/page-down keys, or a Del key for clearing inbox messages, or a right mouse button, definitely not a middle mouse button. It's really hard to get around Widelands on a modern laptop
-
controlling the game speed is a basic thing that I should not have to do a tutorial to learn about. Gameplay tutorials are great. UI tutorials mean the UI needs fixing
I'm happy and grateful that Widelands is a thing, so thanks!

I added a poll. So please be free and raise your voice there, so we have an idea how the user preferences are.

Welcome to the forum!

I also think that it's much too slow
- the mini map is also basically unusable for scrolling because the contents move when you click, they need to stay still
Do you mean the animations which happen when you change the place on the minimap? Oh yes, they are very annoying, you can turn them off in the main menu. I'd suggest to make it default that they are turned off...

In the new development version, we have some buttons for changing the speed.
Maybe it would be good if one could easily customize the keys like in many other games...

Wanted to save the world, then I got widetracked

I implemented the following speed stepping: 0⇒0.5⇒1.0⇒1.5⇒2⇒3...
For the Fastlanders: I could implement a shortcut to set the game to 10x if you want me. Shift + Page Up⇒10x & Shift + Page Down⇒1x

Shift + Page Down⇒1x
A hotkey to set the speed to 1× is something I miss very much
I implemented the following speed stepping: 0⇒0.5⇒1.0⇒1.5⇒2⇒3...
The 0.5× is very welcome, but IMHO the steps 1→1.5→2→3… seem illogical. Alternative suggestion:
- PageUp/PageDown changes gamespeed by ±1
- Shift+PageUp/Shift+PageDown changes gamespeed by ±0.25
- Ctrl+PageUp/Ctrl+PageDown changes gamespeed by ±10
- Shift+Pause sets speed to =1×

10x would already good! But TBH it doesn't take that much time to go to x10. So nothing urgent I think. Yes your other proposition for time down is cool too!
And I think there is no consensus on the fastland vs speedland, but I like we keep it that way (finally a fight vs Worldsavior I would have won !)

I implemented it like this. But I removed the 0.5x speed since this can now be achieved with Shift + Page Down.
