Since the release of version 1.1, we implemented several hundreds of new features and bugfixes; for example, to name just a few of the highlights:

  • UI Plugins are add-ons that can add more functionality to the user interface
  • Naval Warfare preview: Invade foreign coasts using warships!
This is included as a preview feature and needs to be explicitly enabled in the game setup screen.
  • Soldier garrisons for ports and headquarters
  • Balancing changes to the Amazon economy
  • Fifth scenario for the Frisian campaign
  • More settings in the game setup screen, such as configurable durations for timed win conditions
  • Diplomacy handling for the computer players
  • Stick pinned notes onto map fields to mark important points
  • Hyperlinks let you navigate within the encyclopedia and to the online help
  • Easy maps publishing inside the editor
  • High-resolution images for many more units
  • Accessibility enhancements for many user interface components
  • Expose more functionality to the add-ons and scenario scripting interface
  • Fixed many crashes and hangs and enhanced error handling

Widelands 1.2 is translated completely into Catalan, German, Hungarian, Low German, and Russian, and the translations for 8 other languages are more than ⅔ complete.

Widelands is distributed for Windows (64-bit and 32-bit), Mac OS X ≥ 12.0 (Intel 64-bit) and Arm (≥ 14.0), Linux (AppImage, 64 bit), and in source code. For Linux users, we also provide a Flatpak package and a Ubuntu PPA and try to make compiling as easy as possible, and most distributions will pick up Widelands 1.2 into their repositories very quickly. Both binary and source packages are available under the links below and from our Download page.

If you like what you see, have a look around this site. You may also want to check the forums and our IRC channel, #widelands on LiberaChat, to arrange multiplayer games with other players.

We especially welcome every helping hand: Help us find bugs, translate the game, add new scenarios or features! If you want to get even more involved in the further development of Widelands, you can meet us on the forum at https://www.widelands.org/ or subscribe to widelands-public@lists.sf.net on http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/widelands-public. Releases are also announced to widelands-announce@lists.sf.net (https://sourceforge.net/projects/widelands/lists/widelands-announce).

Only a handful of developers made it possible to keep this project going forward:
Many thanks to Nordfriese, who is tireless working on this project, which also applies to tothxa, just tireless, many thanks!! Thanks also to hessenfarmer and matthiakl !!

Also a big thank you to all the testplayers for finding bugs!

It's great how many ways it can be installed. Appimage (which I'm downloading now), flatpak (which I was using), PPA. I also saw that 1.1 was available as a Snap.

Currently I was searching around for alternate installation ways for another game (starts with a W too) and while I was doing that I noticed that Widelands has more ways. Nice.

I'm on Debian btw which explains why native packages are rarely a good choice. It's fine that Debian is ultra stable and lags but for current games it is a major pain. : ) I'm sure WL 1.2 will be natively available for Debian in a few centuries from now ;- )

I LOVE appimages btw. As an old 8-bit and DOS user there's nothing more gorgeous than having a real single executable file to run. (in case any other oldies remember those days, yes yes some DOS programs needed all sorts of extra files but at least they usually were all lumped in one directory)

Ahhh DL almost done. I can stop now.

You guys forgot to mention the bestest new feature: Road placement previews when holding down CTRL!

SirVer

Congratulations to everybody who contributed to this! Amazing, that WIdelands is still going strong after sooooo many years of development.

Hello unfortunately it is very slow

WorldSavior

Just speed it up then? face-grin.png Widelands can run at lots of different speeds.

Captain_Pirk

Howdy! Could we have a Snap package for Widelands? AppImages don't open for some reason for me ever face-confused.png

Nordfriese

There's a third-party Snap package available for Widelands: https://snapcraft.io/widelands

This game is fabulous! Well done, and keep up the great work! in my language we have this phrase : "دمتون گرم" [reads like : Daametoon Gaarm ] meaning "may your breath be forever warm" (its like a wish of long life and health which is used as an expression of gratitude, fascination) So daametoon garm, developers of Widelands!
