Topic: Highlight flags on roads

Often, when I place a road on uneven terrain (particularly on mountains) it's not clear which yellow flag icons (where flags can be placed) are on the road because there are too many flags overlapping each other. If the flag points on the road were highlighted in a different colour or shape, it would make it easier to see where to click to place blue flags. ![]() ![]() |

If you just want to place flags anywhere on the new road, hold down the ctrl key while building it. Then, flags will be added automatically. But here's what I do, when too many flags are overlapping each other and the ctrl-feature doesn't fit my needs: I build the road step by step from flag to flag. It's not very fast, but you get best results About the highlighting feature - I think, I won't need it. But what do the others think? Cheers, Martin ![]() ![]() |

I like the idea but for another reason. Sometimes I forget to place a flag on a road and don't see it for a long time. If it was in another colour perhaps I would see it earlier. The bigger problem with the flags in the moutain for me is to click at the right flag but to see it. For this I once thought about a construction mode: all terain is displayed flat and all the buildings are displayed a bit transparent in the construction mode. But I don't know if the construction mode was worth the effort. ![]() ![]() |

That's a very original idea, I like it. Perhaps you could open a bug report item for it on Launchpad so that we don't forget about it? Right now is not a good time to implement it because of the freeze, though of course somebody (you? ;)) could do it on a branch that we merge in after the release. ![]() ![]() |

I like the idea of a flat construction mode, especially as I usually take great care where to place roads, etc., often in parallel rows with diagonals intersecting them. That said, it might be better to have it as an option that can be used at any time - eg. press the tab key to flatten the terrain, regardless of whether I'm building or not. Also an option in settings to toggle flat mode when building starts. I like the idea of translucent buildings as well, particularly as it would allow me to see flag positions behind large buildings such as citadels. Have any of you played Stronghold or Stronghold Crusader by Firefly Studios? It had a mode where buildings could be flattened. Maybe some of these features could be options for the build mode - eg. when I press space bar I could choose whether to flatten terrain and/or buildings in addition to showing the build icons. Another tweak could be to highlight a flag (or move it slightly upwards) when the mouse is over it. This would make it clear, even in normal 3D mode mountain areas, which flag marker the mouse is over. I wasn't aware that I could use Ctrl when placing roads to automatically add flags to the roads. However, I get quite a bit of enjoyment from carefully placing flags in specific locations so in some cases Ctrl+road would result in flags being placed in undesirable locations. If I could hold down Shift key to drag a flag to a different location (the road would move with it if necessary) that would be cool. It would mean that I could slide a flag between two positions on a road or even change where the road goes simply by dragging the flag. Holding down Shift+Ctrl would then mean that I could drag the flag at the end of a road to stretch the road, and new flags would be added automatically to the new bits of road. ![]() ![]() |

I dont think, that such a feature is necessary. The advantage is imho not significant and wouldnt be worth the effort. When I build a road, I like to see the area as it is. Then I better can decide whether to use the auto-build-road-feature or not.
Yes, I like that idea, too.
You can press ctrl+shift+road to let the flags be placed backwards.
Yes, you wrote it in the discussion about pulling down flags (http://wl.widelands.org/forum/topic/675/). Two is the oddest prime. ![]() ![]() |

I see another great advantage in it, if the flags where highlighted in another color: I often get the problem, that an road isn't build were i want to do it - cause an tree, desert or other thing is in the way so the road doesn't go straight from the building to the desired/wanted flag...
For me is the CTRL+SHIFT+Road shortkey new and i will need it sometimes. But it would be more effectiv if i KNEW the way, the roads is build BEFORE i build it! As another possibility i suggest an blinking/pulsing road if the STRG key and mouse points on a flag for more than 3 seconds so the player can see the road which would be build this way... Protip: When you destroy a flag, hold down the CTRL key while clicking the button. I guess this should be added to the game hints eventually if it isn't yet. ![]() ![]() |

Yes, that should be added. I dont remember I ever read about that. Maybe because of my bad memory But it definitely makes destroying longer roads much easier. Thanks for the hint. Two is the oddest prime. ![]() ![]() |

I'm sorry this is a little delayed, but this is the most relevant thread I could find. Roads: I too have issues seeing the yellow flags and would like to propose that the control+road also apply to already laid roads - that is, a road that has a beginning and end and even perhaps a few flags already. At this point the control+road would fill in the flag suggested and any other missing ones to the best of it's ability. Also: Can we make it an option to change the colour of the flags once they're part of a road? ![]() ![]() |
