Hello everyone, I'm new here. I'm a watercolorist (working traditionally, on paper) and I'd like to offer my services. I've talked to the maintainer of Widelands via email, and discussed that I will do some portraits (starting with the Frisians), and later on maybe some loading screens.

I'm not much of a gamer (although I played Widelands a bit), and I can't figure out the source code paths. I'll need a bit of help regarding the portraits for the Frisians. Basically, I need this info:

Name of the person to be painted, gender, and rank (e.g. king, woodcutter, soldier etc).

Then I can go ahead and paint them. Thx!

Hi Eugenia,
a very warm welcome to our forums.
And many thanks for the generous offer with the artwork.
Currently there is a scenario under development. which is discussed here.
There your contributions might be very valuable as well.

I am really looking forward to new art in our campaign scenarios.

Thank you, I replied on that thread!

Do you have any of the info for the Frisians btw? I need to start somewhere...

Hi Eugenia and welcome to the forum face-smile.png

For the Frisian tribe, here's a list of the characters in order of their appearance in the campaign …:

  • Reebaud1, the Chieftain of the tribe. He's a chieftain of the old germanic tradition, a fierce and renowned warrior-general.

  • Hauke the Wise1, his old and venerable friend and advisor.

  • Maukor3, an enemy Frisian chieftain.

  • Murilius3, an arrogant Proconsule of the Roman Empire.

  • Claus Lembeck1, a Frisian Knight of Denmark and Northern Frisia. (Based loosely on a legendary historical and literary figure.)

  • Henneke Lembeck1, his young-adult son and esquire.

  • Angadthur3, an Atlantean prince.

  • Marcus Caius Iniucundus3, another arrogant Roman legate.

  • Linthesilea3, a hostile Amazon leader.

  • Ocke Ketelsen2, a wise and friendly Frisian Alderman on the island Helgoland.

All characters are male except Linthesilea the female Amazon.
If you want more detailed characterisations, just ask, I have a detailed backstory in my head for each character who appears in the campaign, much more than what makes it into their storyline face-wink.png

One small note on colouring, the Frisian tribe in Widelands is heavily featured with the Northern Frisian national colours of yellow-red-blue, and I would suggest that it would fit if the Frisian characters also feature with these colours.

I'm much looking forward to seeing the artwork face-smile.png

  1. Protagonists

  2. Friends

  3. Enemies (most of them have very few boxes of speech.)

well, our data is all hosted on github or codeberg. Additionally an exact copy of the data folder is created with our installer for each release.
the campaigns have their own subfolder, and each mission has a subfolder like +++##.wmf where +++ stands for a three letter abbreviation of the tribe and ## is the numnber of the mission.
in each campaig there is a subfolder "pics" where all the artwork for the mission is stored.
For the empire mission 4 (emp04.wmf) I created 2 character images by just modding the existing 3 characters. I did the same to create at least some variety in the storyline by jst mirroring character images over the vertical axis.
obviously this is not very good. so we could use some help here as well, but the amazons and frisians maybe need more help.
for the empire characters the 3 main characters are described here in our wiki, Marcus is the electd mayor of the capital of the empire after the steward of the king was expelled, and Julia is the abbess of the "temple of vesta".

Nordfriese: Thank you so much, this is very, very helpful. I will start painting tomorrow on first light, right after feeding my cats and put some chicken in the oven. The day will be all for painting after that... :-)

hessenfarmer: I went through the data folder, but it was difficult to find who's who, and which image is a character and which one was not (because the file manager wouldn't show me thumbnails for everything, since they were not all the same format). The way Nordfriese replied earlier above, giving me enough info on each character, it's very helpful for me to visualize them, and to be able to paint them. I will start with the Frisians, then the Amazons, and then I'll move to the other tribes for portraits. It's good that the Empire has these 3 characters in the wiki, so I can repaint them. For the extra two for your mission, please give me their info (name, gender, rank/who they are), so I can do these too when I do the other 3. Then it'd be the Atlantean and Barbarians. And then the loading screens for each campaign...

I was thinking for some ideas for the splash screen too, when the game first starts, but that would require a lot more feedback, since we need to get it right -- first impressions matter. :-)

To keep expectations in check, as I explained to Nordfriese via email, I paint traditionally. Watercolor doesn't look like any illustration made digitally for modern games. It has a textured, vintage look and feel. On top of that, my style is that of the so called Slavic illustration tradition. Here's some of my work:
