I've searched the forums here and the issues at codeberg but didn't find what I was thinking. Is it possible to add a retreat button to military buildings so that soldiers that are attacking from that building break off their attack and return to the building.
Does anybody know if this could be coded as an add-on or would this have to be
hardcoded into the game, my Lua skills aren't yet up to it.
I ask this because if you attack someone with too large a number of soldiers , most of them just stand around, especially if there is a choke point

Thoughts, anyone...

This would also help if you came under attack and needed to get soldiers back

This would have to be hardcoded.

The idea sounds interesting; it would open up new military tactics and strategies for attacking, as opposed to the current one-shot approach. However this would also mean yet more focus on military tactics and strengthen attackers, therefore a cautious -½ from me.

I like the current behaviour, because it forces you to be careful how many soldiers you send to attack, and how many you leave to defend against a counter-attack.

In many ways I agree, the current behavior requires you to think. Those whom use the all-or-nothing approach
often find themselves in trouble however as Nordfriese wrote, it would open up new strategies.
I also agree that it may make the game more militaristic but not overly so. I thought of this idea when playing an 8 player map where I was attacking an AI player and didn't know there
was another in striking distance from me,
I hadn't expanded that way at the time and the AI player had two castles outside of visual range.
Once I had launched my attack ( with a smile on my face) the other AI launched an attack against me
I had no way of knowing they were there and no way to recall troupes to my defence hence the idea.
