Every single time I play it comes down to who has the most iron ore in their lands. When the iron runs out, you're fracked; No more soldiers. AT ALL. This is really what brings the game down from a solid placement to an unfinished meh. You should be able to dig iron from the ground, or SOMETHING. Once the tiny amounts of iron ore has run out, there's nothing you can do. Without iron, no soldiers. There should be some kind of militia that only uses wooded spears or something. ![]() ![]() |

If you build wrong type of mine (or the source is depleted), you can still gain some ores. There is 5 or 10% of chance for digging up any ore. Another thing is that map makers are placing less iron that it is needed in the game. einstein13 ![]() ![]() |

So if I cover all mountains in just iron mines, I might be able to get by? Albeit poorly? ![]() ![]() |

how long do you take to run out of iron? because on most maps you'll need dozens of hours for it. the game is designed to be won before that time. generally, someone gain an advantage and attacks, much earlier than resource depletion. Since AI is programmed to attack if it has a power advantage, I assume you could kill at any time and are just sitting on your empire, enjoying its working. Or you are playing only a very specific map with few resources? I really can't see any other scenario there. ![]() ![]() |

@king: he can play with another person with almost exactly the same power. So nobody can win over the other. @sugartits: yes, you will get some. In last pvp tournament I tried to get 2 pieces of gold by that method. Although it is very food-consuming, so probably after building some mines your economy will fail a bit. einstein13 ![]() ![]() |

Have you tried the Lesser Ring map (https://wl.widelands.org/maps/lesser-ring-11/)? On that map, gold is rare, but there is plenty of iron ore. Philipp ![]() ![]() |

I've tried a few maps, but iron usually runs out after just a 2-3 hours. I don't know if I'm building too many soldiers? ![]() ![]() |

impossible. mines don't run out so fast. there are only two possible explanations: 1) you are playing at 20x speed: in this case the people should be moving too fast to track, crossing the sccreen in few seconds. i doubt it's the case 2) you are building mines at random without sending geologists. in that case the reason you are without iron ore is because you are not building the iron mines on iron deposits. before making mines you must call a geologist (you can do so from a flag situated on a mountain); the geologist will smack his hammer around and put a tag depending on what resources it finds: black for coal, red for iron, yellow or gold, white for stone. build mines accordingly ![]() ![]() |

Yes, maybe? How much do you train them? Or you don't enhance your mines?
