¶
The world (map) of Widelands contains a wide variety of ressources . Ultimately , all economic systems of all tribes in Widelands
¶
are based on the exploitation / mining of the ressources available on the map , their processing , and then the recruitment and training of soldiers .
¶
Soldiers , in turn , are needed to reach and develop new ressources in the world .
¶
The availability and efficient processing of ressources is, among other things , a key factor that determines a player's victory or defeat .
¶
There are unbalanced maps. Here, the map author intentionally created a challenge for certain player positions on the map, which start the game with a ressource disadvantage compared to other player positions. However, even balanced maps can have an unbalanced amount of ressource types, so that, for example, the map contains a lot of stone and iron, but hardly any coal or gold. However, in most tribal economic systems, coal and iron are required in equal quantities to produce secondary products. This can therefore also be a type of challenge intended by a map author. ¶
Some tribes in Widelands cannot mine and process certain ressources. For example, the Amazons cannot mine iron ore or coal. However, the Amazons are more dependent on gold and stone ressources, and in the case of the Amazons, on more space for jungle forests for charcoal as a replacement for the unmineable coal. ¶
With a world add-on, it is also possible to add entirely new ressources to the Widelands game world. ¶
¶
# All Resources ¶
## Wood ¶
Trees are not technically true ressources, but objects in the game world . However , tree logs are one of the most basic ressources for every tribe .
¶
Some tribes , such as the Atlanteans or Barbarians , are more dependent on wood than others .
¶
The Amazons have a greater variety of wood products due to their connection to the Amazon jungle .
¶
In addition to normal wood , the Amazons also use basalt wood , ironwood , and rubber , which the other tribes cannot use ( or can only use as normal wood ) .
¶
Wood is mostly needed as tree material , as well as for processed tree material ( planks ) .
¶
Wood is a renewable ressource , as foresters replant trees . Wood is mined by woodcutters .
¶
¶
## Stone ¶
Rocks are not technically true ressources , but rather objects in the game world . However , rocks are one of the most basic ressources for every tribe .
¶
Some tribes , such as the Empire or the Amazons , rely more heavily on stone than others .
¶
The Amazons need stone to make tools and weapons , which in turn are needed to recruit new warriors .
¶
The Empire can extract additional marble from rocks and marble mines . Marble can then be further processed into marble columns .
¶
The Atlanteans can also extract additional rock crystals and diamonds from crystal mines .
¶
Stone and marble , both in the Empire and the rock crystals and diamonds of the Atlanteans , are primarily used as building materials .
¶
Stone is not a renewable ressource , and rocks are mined from the surface by stonemasons .
¶
Underground , granite / marble / crystal deposits are mined by miners .
¶
¶
## Animals ¶
Wild animals are not technically true ressources, but rather movable objects in the game world . Wild animals are an initial ressource for the food supply of every tribe .
¶
Some tribes , such as the Barbarians or the Amazons , are heavily dependent on the wildlife population in their local area .
¶
Wild animals are the basis for meat . Only the Barbarians and Amazons can breed new wild animals with the Gamekeeper .
¶
These two tribes are also more closely connected to nature . From the midgame / endgame onwards ,
¶
the Empire has pig breeding , and the Frisians have reindeer breeding .
¶
Reindeer breeding produces not only meat but also fur , which in turn is needed and processed for the Frisian tribe's armaments and maritime industries .
¶
Wild animals are a partially renewable ressource , dependent on the tribe . All tribes have a hunter who hunts and kills wild animals .
¶
Wild animals can only be bred by the Gamekeeper , which only the Barbarians and Amazons have .
¶
¶
## Fisch ¶
Fish are a ressource that can be found underwater . However , only fish ressources directly on the coastline are usable , as are fishermen who catch / fish fish from land .
¶
Fish are an initial ressource for the food supply of every tribe . Some tribes , such as the Atlanteans or Frisians , rely heavily on access to water and the associated coastline .
¶
Only the Atlanteans and Frisians can breed new fishes . The Frisians do this in ponds on land .
¶
Ponds are technically immobile objects in the game world and not a separate type of terrain .
¶
These two tribes are also more closely connected to the sea .
¶
Fish is a partially renewable ressource , depending on the tribe .
¶
All tribes have a fisherman who catches / fishes fish from the coast .
¶
¶

# All Resources ¶
¶
## Space ¶
Building sites are also a resource, but unlike other resources, they cannot be consumed. ¶
However, building sites can be occupied by buildings, roads, flags, and other immovable objects, such as crop fields or trees. ¶
Thus, a building site can only be occupied by one of these types at a time. ¶
A building site becomes available and can therefore be considered renewable when the building, road, or flag is demolished or destroyed, or when the crop field has been harvested or dried out, and in the case of trees, when they are felled or dry out due to aging. ¶
The availability of building sites on a map depends solely on the underlying terrain, the local elevation gradient of the terrain, and the size of the usable and potentially accessible area on the map. ¶
Some tribes, usually the more complex tribes such as the Frisians, Amazons, Europeans and Sumerians, can improve the underlying terrain with a special, very expensive building ¶
by making it more fertile for trees or by draining unusable bodies of water with dikes, thus gaining land that can then be built on. ¶
There are the following building site types: ¶
¶
Image | Building Site Type | Technical | Description ¶
:----: | ---- | ---- | ---- ¶
| Harbor | port | All buildings, roads and flags, but not mines, can be placed on this building site, as well as an exclusive harbor building. ¶
| Large | big | All buildings, roads and flags, but not mines, can be placed on this building site. ¶
| Medium | medium | All buildings, roads and flags, but not mines and large buildings, can be placed on this building site. ¶
| Small | small | Only small buildings, roads and flags can be placed on this building site. ¶
| Flag | none | Only roads and flags can be placed on this building site. ¶
| Mine | mine | Only mines, roads and flags can be placed on this building site. ¶
¶
Large buildings block the construction of other large and medium buildings within a radius of 2 around them.
¶
Large and medium buildings, or immovable objects, also block access to the construction site for workers or soldiers. ¶
¶

## Fish ¶
