In blender 2.79 select all the models. ctrl + c

In blender 2.80 open a new file. Remove the default cube. ctrl + v

by "clean" I just mean new file. face-tongue.png

No copy and paste needed. To get the files working again open them with Blender 2.79, select "Save as..." from the menu and overwrite the existing blender file. The newly written files opens without any problem in blender 2.8x.
