Champions / HeroesPerhaps each tribe could have a champion or hero unit that the player can only build one of, sort of like David or Goliath or Achilles. It should be able to single handedly fight 3 soldiers and capture smaller guard houses or outposts. To counter it requires a group of 4 or more soldiers. It could be used as a character in scripted scenarios where you have to preserve the hero or get it to do something. It should be fairly simple to implement - just make a special soldier with boosted abilities and set a build limit of one, and have special training requirements etc. Special forcesThese could be special ability troops that don't attack the normal way. eg: BurglerEnters buildings that contain gold and carries back one gold bar to its house each trip. SaboteurEnters a building and makes it stop for a period of time (basically like pressing the stop button). The player can start it again if it realises it has been sabotaged, but it may not realise it and this could slow the economy. Highwayman / banditRobs goods in transit on roads. Snatches them from workers and brings them back. This could range from being a nuisance to having a big impact if high value or shortage goods are intercepted. Guerilla foresterPlants trees around enemy farms so the farmers have less space to grow crops. Countering such unitsTo counter such units either special or regular guard buildings need to be built to detect and kill them or perhaps they can be caught if they walk too close to soldier-containing buildings.

Such suggestions are popping up up from time to time, e.g.: https://codeberg.org/wl/widelands/issues/1764
Some things sounds easy to implement but they aren't. If you think it is easy, just do it
