One question: Etendez-vous or Étendez-vous? Does French still have that convention that accents get dropped above capital letters?

We always put the accents, if not, it's not the same sound, the same world.. an accent is not an option, he often make a different letter.

So we never had a rule who said to not put the accents.

J’ai pourtant appris à l’école qu’il ne fallait pas accentuer les majuscules.

Plusieurs personnes ont effectivement appris ou entendu dire qu’il ne fallait pas accentuer les majuscules ou les capitales. Il est vrai qu’en écriture manuscrite cursive on accentue rarement les majuscules. Il faut aussi reconnaître que l’accentuation des capitales est loin d’avoir été pratiquée systématiquement par tous les typographes de toutes les époques. Des contraintes techniques pouvaient rendre la chose difficile, mais les typographes consciencieux ont habituellement accentué les capitales. Leur accentuation était aussi chose malaisée à la machine à écrire, mais les dactylographes ingénieux trouvaient le moyen de le faire.

Aujourd’hui, les systèmes informatiques bien configurés permettent d’utiliser sans problème les capitales accentuées. Il n’y a donc plus de raison de se priver de cette pratique recommandée par les bons dictionnaires, grammaires et codes typographiques, ainsi que par l’Académie française.
