What the different color of workarea means?

for example, the workarea is usually light blue, but some building have an orange border also around their workarea.

I also found that workarea is not a real property of the building; instead, it belongs to the worker - defined in the worker's conf. It seems to be calculated looking how far a worker can move before doing its work. Is it right?

Hmm, which production buildings have an orange border? I believe some military buildings have that, to indicate that they control a larger territory after upgrading. And yes, for production buildings, the workarea is really a property of the worker, you got that 100% correct.

Yes, military buildings have orange borders. But, if it indicates that the control area will be larger when it is upgraded, the color policy is at least strange.

Fortress controls up to 11 "distance-units" away Citadel controls up to 12 "distance-units" away

But first 11 "distance-units" of a fortress are orange-marked, and only the last one (the one that you'll control when you upgrade to citadel) is normally marked. I think it should be the opposite: mark first 11 points with normal mark and the remaining 1 with a orange mark (and not a orange border)
