I think they are great, though I like 6 more. But can the be a little smaller? Maybe just a pixel or 2, but I think that if you shrink them they get less distracting and with the colors it will be clear what where to build.

Well, it appears the vocal majority favors the icons in 6. I may do some very minor tweaks to get them ready, but you can expect to see them in the game VERY SOON! face-smile.png

Thank you, fraang, for your fine work. Keep it up! And thank you , COMMUNITY. Together we have made Widelands what it is and together we forge its destiny.

Astuur has proposed a variation on the build help icons, suggesting making them semi-transparent.
He makes his proposal in the bug report found at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/726993

Here is how the proposed icons would appear in the game:

Let's hear your thoughts. face-smile.png

It will definitely take some getting used to, but I like it a lot. It makes the buildhelp more subtle and less intrusive.

Edit: Forget about my previous technical comment, I was being stupid. (What I said applies only to colour key rendering, which we don't use.)

Just want to mention that I got the idea of using transparency after havening read Chucks guidelines here. http://wl.widelands.org/wiki/GraphicsDevelopment/
I keep the buildhelp on most of the time while playing, and hoped that a less intrusive solution might serve their purpose just as well. Another reason was, that the influence zones of buildings are somewhat better visible.

Also, I want to say, that I like the design of the icons as such a lot. Great work!

Being no programmer, I apologize for all my suggestions that imply undue workload and for other misjudgements due to lack of expertise or relevant skills.
I am on Win32, have no means to compile, and rely on prefabricated distributions (Thanks to Tino).

Thanks for the self-correction. face-smile.png And I would add that your desire to convey technical information for the benefit of others in the WL community is definitely not "stupid". The knowledge and understanding of the readers and contributors to this and the rest of the forums spans the entire spectrum of experience. The Widelands project and we all benefit when individuals share their knowledge and experience. Thanks again!

Yes I like the idea of semi-transparence. I would suggest something about 75-65 %. What do you think?

Ok I have made a build helper icon for the mines.

The image is not cropped at the moment. If the icon is accepted i will crop it and make it hopfully ready for ingame.

Looks good to me. :-) I hope, it is visible when semi-transparent? (That was a question for a screenshot, when available. face-wink.png )
