One feature of ships in Widelands that I like is that each ship has a unique name. As far as I know, it doesn't have any real impact on the game. But it does give the game some additional character.

I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to quickly see where each ship was heading -- which port was its current destination. Currently, the only way to do that is to click on the ship window's "Go to destination" button, which moves the map to the port the ship is headed towards.

Now, if each port had a unique name, similar to the ships, then each ship window could have a status bar that shows its destination.

The names could be automatically generated like is done for ships. There could be "tribal names" that fit with the ethos of each tribe. Or, they could be simple generic names, like "Port 1".

Or, the play could be allowed to enter a name for each ship. This is probably the most ambitious approach, and may not be consistent with the "Widelands Way".

But if ships can have names, why not ports?
