When starting widelands (all newer versions) I am getting a dialog box stating "To run this application, the resolution of the screen should not be less than 800x600. My resolution is 1440xsomething. The problem is that the popup demands focus, meaning that Widelands loose focus. If I just keep on switching to the widelands application, eventually I will manage to enter Widelands.

Hi hulagutten

That is a strange problem. Never heared of something similiar before. Especially strange because you can run Widelands quite fine with resolutions like 640x480. ... but okay I just remember at least Build13 was hardcoded to use a 800x600 menu.

However, what kind of of Operatingsystem are you using? what happens, if you try to run with --fullscreen=true ?

--fullscreen=true makes no difference as it is already running fullscreen.

I am running Windows XP SP2.

It is the algorithm for detecting the screen resolution, which is flawed. Possibly because it did not expect my resolution of 1440xsomething.

well just googled around a bit. There are many people with similiar problems (with other games). Obviously the problem is unrelated to the type of graphics card (although it mostely happens with nvidia cards) and is (in most cases) a problem of interfering programs or hardware drivers. In fact the most often mentioned solution was to shutdown network connection. (Sounds strange, but you will surely find the same if searching on google.)

However two ideas:

  • set fullscreen=false in the widelands "config" file or start with --fullscreen=false - it seems as if this problem is a fullscreen only problem.

  • download the newest version from http://widelands.8-schuss.de and install it. Now set your resolution to the one you've got. - if the menu does not allow to do so, please manually edit the "config" file which will be in "...\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\.widelands\" in versions newer than build13

Cheers

I have actually changed my internet connection now, so I am not getting the error any more. Thanks for your help, though.
