This is the same topic as the one we had about a year ago (?) with hebrew language.

Easiest solution would still - as then - to be with implementing the text renderer with pango through sdl_pango. Unfortunately I have not really been able to find out how to do this with the OpenGL backend.

Pango does not much for us there and does not integrate well with layouting engines. I looked into this, see my blog: sirver.net.

I've just seen that OpenTTD uses icu. No idea if it's usable for us, just passing along the link face-smile.png
