Topic: Flexibility of player colors

We don't have only 8 different player colors, but 16. Most of them are never used. What about making player colors independent from the starting positions? So starting positions could get linked to a number and not to a color, and after chosing the starting position, one could change the player colors if one is not happy with the default. +1 Should be fairly easy. We could have a colour chooser button similar to the team button that offers the 16 player colours. Only difficulty would be to make sure two players don't pick the same colour… Top Quote |

I have concerns about that. What will happen if two players want the same color? In a best scenario they arrange themselves, but in a worst scenario they make enemies of themselves. I think this is not worth the work. Fight simulator for Widelands: |

On the topic of colours and starting positions... I'd like to have an option for shuffled (random) starting positions - particularly for asymmetric maps. (Incidentally, The word 'unbalanced' is used in the map selection screen, but as far as I can tell the maps are still close to being fair, just not equal. So its really just 'not balanced' rather than 'unbalanced'. I call them asymmetric - but that might have other confusing connotations.) Top Quote |

I think the ability to choose or change colours is very important. I have several friends who refuse to play WL as their slight visual impairments make differentiating players difficult. Red and Blue are easy to use but several times I hear is that yellow or green or even orange! And players getting confused about why a player is attacking himself. Picking from 16 preset colours should allow people to select 5 or 6 that are not confusing, being able to create a new colour pallette should allow people to make something that works for them. By the way: The blue of position 1 has changed, imho in a very bad way. It has been a beatiful dark blue in b19 and b20, in the dev version it's some rather ugly bright blue... Why happened this change?
The host could chose the colors then.
In that case I have to hope that some developer will do the work for fun Wanted to save the world, then I got widetracked Top Quote |

Changed by https://github.com/widelands/widelands/pull/3582 to fix the usernames being unreadable in the chat
You could ping Jonas, he's currently redesigning the game setup screens for >8 players (https://github.com/widelands/widelands/pull/3847), perhaps he'll agree to implement this as well Top Quote |

Very importand point.
Agreed. So the first is to choose a color from predefined colors. On the long run there is a need of configurable colors. Fight simulator for Widelands: |

Oh I see. Though, maybe it wasn't the best solution to make the blue so bright...
Thanks for the hint Wanted to save the world, then I got widetracked Top Quote |

Noted and agreed to implement. However, will be postponed a little, because UI::Box layouting still gives me some headaches (although I just had a breakthrough I think) My first solution to the problem "two players want the same color" would be a first come, first serve approach. So when a player has chosen a specific color, it is removed from the color picker so nobody else is able to choose an already chosen color. Top Quote |
