You could try to use "85.235.66.69" or "2a03:4000:32:524:48cb:feff:feae:b0c6" as the address of the metaserver. That is actually the new metaserver (the one for after the server move) so you won't see anyone there, but if it works your opponent can use it, too. (Besides, after Saturday it should be the default.)

tried to ping those addresses. the ipv4 works, the ipv6 doesn't. if that's the address of the new server and it's going to get official saturday, I can just stay put until saturday. but how do I set that up as the new server for widelands?

and how exactly do I use a vpn to try to fix my problem?

You have to add the line

metaserver="85.235.66.69"

in the conf file of widelands. In the section [global].

New development

I recovered build19 from launchpad and tried it, it worked perfectly. However, I'm not sure I'm connected to the same server; I probably am not. It must have shifted something in the config files, because now I can also join multiplayer with build20, but I see lobby empty... when there is a game scheduled just now. So, I think I've just been sent to a different server.

Someone said that on saturday server is going to change; does that mean that on sunday I should be able to play? Exactly when I can try?

Have you removed the 'metaserver' entry in the conf file when trying to connect with build19?

Regarding the down time: It should last approximately 1 hour, so playing on sunday will surely be possible. I guess on saturday afternoon it will be possible also.

yes, the line was removed.

Oh, still a difference. I cannot actually connect to an existing account. On build 20, I can connect if I do not select "connect to an existing account", otherwise it says it lost connection to the metaserver. On build 19, I can connect if I do not connect to an existing account, but if I try to connect to an existing account, it says "password wrong". checked three times, the password is correct (it's the same for this account, right?). I even tried to make a new account, does not work. So, looks like even build19 cannot really connect.

EDIT: this is my log here

InternetGaming: Connecting to the metaserver.

Could not resolve network name: resolve: Host sconosciuto

[NetClient]: Trying to connect to 85.235.66.69:7395 ... success.

InternetGaming: Sending login request.

InternetGaming: Client king_of_nowhere1 logged in at UTC Thu Jun 20 17:01:34 2019

InternetGaming: Server time offset is 2 second(s).

InternetGaming: Received a client list update with 1 items.

InternetGaming: Received a game list update with 0 items.

InternetGaming: logout(Connection was closed by the client normally.)

[NetClient] Closing network socket connected to 85.235.66.69:7395.

this is frist without logging to an existing account

InternetGaming: Connecting to the metaserver.

Could not resolve network name: resolve: Host sconosciuto

and this is trying to connect to an existing account. they doo completely different things

No, you have to set password for the game here: https://wl.widelands.org/ggz/changepw on your profile page.

You were connected to the new metaserver, I found the entry in the logs. There has to be a "metaserver" line somewhere in your config file, maybe it was moved further down when the game rewrote the file? The problems with the login are probably (hopefully) due to a wrong password.
