Saving here for easy reference an idea that came up while trying to justify the addition of Egyptians to Widelands, needing a tribe diversified enough from the existing ones.

The general idea

It is about a tribe that has to do with the Arabic desert. Like Atlanteans are about water, that tribe could be about desert, sand being both their friend and their enemy, occasionally destroying their settlements and forcing them to load their camels and settle elsewhere, being cursed to meet established green civilizations on their way (like Egyptians), only to desertify them in their struggle for survival. The parallel fate could be the only resemblance with the Atlanteans, the rest of the tribe being very different, their most precious ware being their animals (goats and camels). Some inspiration could be taken from Dune.

More specific possibilities

  • They could be the only tribe missing the abilities to sustain a forest, cultivate cereals, produce coal, dismantle buildings, and go fishing.
  • They could use leather instead of logs (still possessing woodcutters for ground-clearing operations) and processed leather for advanced buildings, the smallest of their buildings being tents (instead of huts and houses) and suffering erosion over time (they could have a maintainer of buildings instead of a collector of food, using leather to serve buildings in a limited range).
  • Their wells could mine petroleum after water gets exhausted (which they use in place of coal and in their ship construction).
  • They could build small military caves on mining sites.
  • They could have camel-breeders and use camels as second carriers.
  • They could have goat-breeders, seed grass instead of cereals (grass can grow on mountains as well) then fold buildings could release goats there instead of bees (both need big working areas), producing wool, leather, meat, milk and yogurt (differences between camels and goats could increase the variety of foods for miners, trainers and other jobs).

I'd like to clear up that you shouldn't count on me for the development of that tribe.

I like the idea. Maybe they could use terraforming in a way that they can turn any desert into grass or similar of the other worlds this would use a well. Any goat herded on this ground would desertify the terrain again. Like goats and camels do normally. Or we could have the ability to dig special wells / lakes were there is sufficient water to form an oasis. they should need a minimal amount of log for buoiolding their tent based buildings and for tools maybe weapons. but they can't cultivate trees. their soldiers could use slingshots and stone as a weapon. Thanks for the idea

To make it clear they won't be really nomadic on a single map even a large one but they will suffer from natural ressources exhausted in a specific place on the map like nomads do. But it will over a lot of possibility to a storyline of a campaign.
