To get root, you can use 'sudo bash' and check with 'whoami' afterwards

To find out actual installed version use 'sudo -l | grep widelands' (the switch is small L), to verify if current installed version is b18 or bzr7756

Can you run glxgears? That is a OpenGL demo program. It seems that Widelands has trouble finding any OpenGL software on the system, much more so a suitable modern one.

The reason why your old widelands installation is now not running anymore is probably that the new widelands installation has overwritten your ~/.widelands/config file, setting the OpenGL Renderer.

You can try to edit that file, or start your old widelands with the --opengl=0 parameter.

Regarding the OpenGL Version: 1.4 Mesa 10.5.9 This is rather current Mesa version, but a low OpenGL version. I do not know if widelands can use 1.4, but your card could do 2.1. Sounds to me that you need better or newer graphics drivers. After that, you probably also need to set up DRI (you will find out with 'glxinfo | grep Direct').

CMake is evil.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am going to close this post and I am in agreement that I do need a better graphics card, even a better spec computer for this to run successfully.

I am not in agreement. Everything I read in this thread tells me that your computer's hardware should easily run Widelands. It probably just needs an update to your graphics drivers or setting changes for OpenGL in your X config.
