https://wl.widelands.org/docs/ is auto-generated. I do not know how easy getting rid of it is.

I wrote some comments in the SandBox. Tibor, you can also write your suggestions there, then all information is collected in one place.

we can link https://wl.widelands.org/docs/wl/ instead of https://wl.widelands.org/docs/

I am going to the sandbox now to add those comments

EDIT:

@wl-zocker - where is that comment section, I cannot see it

This is the auto generated stuff:

Specially, all URLs that start with /wiki/ are not auto generated.

Edit: fixed links.

@Tibor: "section" was probably the wrong name, I mean the last column in each table.

@SirVer: Your links to "this file"/"this folder" do not work.

https://wl.widelands.org/encyclopedia/ Do you really want to remove it without substitution? Once we have a good in-game help, the data from there could be read and be written to our homepage.

Thanks. Fixed.

What is the alternative? Right now it shows broken (i.e. outdated) information - not sure if that is better than not showing anything at all. Fixing it would require quite some work (~ 3-5 days to get it working again) and the in-game help is only blocked on https://code.launchpad.net/~widelands-dev/widelands/fh1 - and Gun is actively working on that. Given her productivity we will be able to merge this this year and then can start making the in-game help awesome. I am open for alternative suggestions of course.

If the branch is merged this year, there is no need to fix this in the meantime. (The alternative would have been to take the current source code, do the corrections manually and handle the page as user-editable. But I think that is not worth the trouble.)
As I wrote, the information from the in-game help could then be used on our homepage. I think it would be really nice to have the information available on our website, too - I expect a building's input to be found in a wiki. It would however be good to keep the page (and the links to it) in some way. I agree that outdated information confuse the reader, so I think the best thing is to delete the page and show something like "We are currently working on this help page."

The info in the encyclopedia is generated from conf files. Since we will change all these to Lua files, the webpage won't be able to read them at all anymore. So, it's either a complete rewrite or saying goodbye.

A manual edit is a very bad idea - I already found errors in the ingame building help before I automated it, and keeping up with the homepage will be even more difficult. Developers will simply forget to document all changes.

Thanks for your comments.

It is nearly unpossible to remove/rename articles without a "What links here?" list. Without such a list you must cycle through all articles to find links that point to the article which you are willing to remove/rename... Otherwise you get a (some) deadlink(s). And after clicking on a deadlink you where invited to create this article (which you just had removed/renamed) ...

So without this functionality, working on the wiki isn't really satisfying face-sad.png

About the websitemenu (my suggestion):

Developement

This has to be sorted and done by those who knows about this. Nothing for me.

The Game

Because its the second menu, it should contain something that is interesting or importend for new users.

  1. Description -> ok
  2. DownloadPage -> ok
  3. Screenshots -> ok
  4. Artwork -> ok
  5. Maps -> ok
  6. Encyclopedia -> omit
  7. Changelog -> omit
  8. The Widelands Project -> taken from "Wiki" menu
  9. Widelands development team -> ok, or because its also in Development, omit

Wiki

A wiki is a thing where all information of playing/using widelands is stored

  1. Game Manual -> ok
  2. The Tribes -> addintional
  3. The Editor -> additional
  4. Creating Game Content -> Put it somewhere in "Development"
  5. About this wiki -> to create, an article about working with this wiki (WikiSyntax, List of all pages etc.)
  6. List of all pages -> ok or could be placed in "About this wiki"

Clicking on a menuheader ("The Game"/"Wiki") should bring up a site which reflects the menu itself. For "Wiki" this site is Main Page, for "The Game" this article has to be made.

Edit: a Contactpage should also be in the menu

You could use the search function to search for Wiki pages containing the title of the page you want to move. There is no guarantee that you find all links (e.g. a link like this, i.e. the title of the linked page does not appear), but certainly better than cycling through all pages.

If necessary, you can also create something like the terminology correspondence table, i.e. you list the old (removed) site and the new one. This makes it easier to see where a page has moved, if you overlook a link.
